Dora
In 2004 verliet zij voor de eerste keer in haar leven haar stad Guatemala-city.
Ze kwam meteen all the way to Leuven,
waar ik een week met haar optrok.
Dora
Ze zei niet veel.
Het eerste uur toch niet.
Daarna wou ze veel, en snel, en iedereen
vertellen over haar land,
dat mooie land met zoveel tragedie.
En op die korte tijd
was ik verkocht
aan haar, haar land, haar strijd.
Schrijven zei ik, dat gaan we doen,
want afscheid nemen wou ik niet.
Maar Dora liet me geen adres.
Pas later begreep ik het
Dora kon niet schrijven, haar huis is geen officieel adres-waardig.
"Ik zit in jouw hart, dat moet volstaan", zei ze.
17 april 2004 was de laatste keer dat ik haar stem hoorde.
En vandaag kreeg ik de tranen in m'n ogen.
Want in m'n mailbox verscheen de volgende zin:
Como estas? Cuentame, mi hija. Te quiero. Dora. Estoy bien. Tu Dora.
Als één zin je zo gelukkig kan maken, dan weet je: graag zien zit em in het hart. Niet in provisoir contact.

Alvaro Colom began his term of office as president of Guatemala on Monday 14 January.

Guatemala is a country plagued by violence and impunity. The ITUC is organising an international conference on the role of trade union organisations in the fight against impunity, to be held from 29 to 31 January 2008 in Guatemala City, and has invited President Colom to inaugurate it. The conference will bring together key political, trade union and social figures from Guatemala and Central America, along with representatives from the regional and international trade union movement. The aim is to develop and implement political and trade union strategies to promote core labour standards, to strengthen the unions’ capacity to fight impunity, and to ensure that the murders of trade unionists are fully investigated and that those responsible are brought to justice. The election of Alvaro Colom as the president of Guatemala has brought renewed hope. The international trade union movement, headed by the ITUC, will keep a close watch on the situation of workers in the country. “The workers of Guatemala are entitled to exercise their trade union rights,” said ITUC General Secretary Guy Ryder, in conformity with the eight Core Conventions of the ILO signed but not fully respected by Guatemala, as shown by the unyielding attacks on trade unionists, the violation of their rights, their abduction and murder. The year 2007 alone saw the murder of Pedro Zamora, General Secretary of STEPQ, in January, two trade unionists from FESTRI, in February, and Marco Tulio Ramírez of SITRABI, in September. The year was closed with a heavily armed attack, on New Year’s Eve, against the home of trade union leader Carlos Enrique Mancilla Garcia, Labour and Disputes Secretary of the CUSG (Confederación de Unidad Sindical de Guatemala), affiliated to the ITUC.

De eerste keer dat ik echt trots was om voor de vakbond te werken, was na het zien van Ken z'n "Bread and roses". Er volgden nog wel zo'n momenten, maar er is er maar één die in beelden zegt wat ik niet altijd verwoord krijg als men weer eens vraagt: "maar wat doe jij nu eigenlijk van werk?"
Ken Loach is 72 en schopt ons nog steeds een geweten.
Ik las onlangs dat je eigenlijk maar 1% van de wereldbevolking nodig hebt, om dingen echt te kunnen veranderen. I'm a believer. So is Ken. Yeah!

Wereld Sociaal Forum 2601 Brx
www.wsf.be Tom Hanks verwoordde het deze morgen schitterend in de krant: "we blijven kansen verknallen om van de wereld een betere plek te maken".
Naar aanleiding van de première van Charlie Wilson's War (met dus Tom Hanks)... én Julia Roberts :-) ... mijmeren over de wereld kan écht mooi zijn...
zonder Tom en Julia maar iedereen is mooi: Wereld Sociaal Forum in Brussel. Kom dat zien!
